Genealogy and Family History

General genealogical information

• The German Genealogy Homepage: a highly useful site with information about history, sources, archives, historical and genealogical associations, about emigration and emigrants.
• Andreas Hanacek's homepage: another site with loads of info, including a list of Mecklenburg emigrants.
• Rootsweb: the largest collection of genealogical sources, databases, and helpful stuff in the Internet
• Cyndi's list: vast, categorized collection of links to genealogical sites all over the world

Emigration research

• Forschungsstelle Niedersächsische Auswanderer in den USA (NAUSA) / Research Center Lower Saxons in the USA: a research center, located at the University of Oldenburg, concentrating on research about emigrants from Lower Saxony to the United States. Has all arrival ship lists of the American ports available on microfilm.
• Hamburg LinkToYourRoots: listings of the Hamburg departure ship lists.
• Ellis Island Records: database with arrivals at Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924.
• The emigration database "Glatzle": database with emigrants from Württemberg, mostly for the 19th century.
• Westland Publications: publishes monographs about German emigration to America; the site includes a comprehensive surname database covering all publications of this company.
• The Palatines to America Homepage: including a large emigration database.
• Online German Emigration Databases: links to regional and local German emigration databases.
• Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild: vast online-searchable database of several hundred ship lists.
• The Olive Tree Genealogy: transcriptions of ship lists, some of them sorted under special headings (like Huguenot ships).
• Passengers to California: transcriptions of ship passenger lists for the ships going from New York to Central America (and farther on to San Francisco). Covering the years 1851-56 and 1865-73.
• Distant Cousin: index of ship lists that are available online.
• Cimorelli: comprehensive databases with North American ship arrivals from 1727 onwards.
• The Death Persons' Society: list of ships arriving in Australia.
• Palmer List of Merchant Vessels: site with ship descriptions and photos.
• Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum Bremerhaven: website of the German shipping museum. Including the offer to search for photos and other material about ships and shipping.
• Kin Ships: a company offering photos of ships (list of ships available included).
• Lou Alfano's page: vast site with many ship descriptions, sorted by name.
• American Plantations and Colonies: comprehensive list of ships travelling to and fro America in the early time (till 18th century); many of them with passenger information.
• Ships and settlers to South Carolina 1751-1756: lists of the German settlers who went to Charleston in the 1750s; mostly from Württemberg.
• Auswanderung aus dem alten Amt Wildeshausen: a list of 19th century emigrants from my hometown Wildeshausen, formerly in the Duchy of Oldenburg. The list, plus additional information, was compiled in a remarkable project, done by pupils of my former school.
• Wiener Trauungen 1782-1802: Liste von Auswanderern nach Ungarn, die auf dem Weg in Wien geheiratet haben.

Databases for family names and individuals

• The LDS databases: the Latter Day Saints have put their immense genealogical indexes online. The site includes the International Genealogical Index (IGI), the Ancestral File (AF), a new index named Pedigree Resource File (PRF), and their library catalogue (FHL).
• The Rootsweb WorldConnect Project: a gigantic project collecting lineage-linked genealogical material.
• The Rootsweb Surname List: another gigantic project collecting information about names, place and date of appearance.
• World Biographical Index: searchable database indexing biographical publications, sorted after countries (Germany, France, England, Scandinavia, etc.). A printed version of this index can be found in larger libraries.
• Family Tree Maker's Internet Family Finder: search engine for genealogical sites on the Internet and for names on CDs published by Broderbund.
• Gedbas: a growing German collection of Gedcom databases.
• Forscherkontakte: a German database with info about family names, places and time frame, and addresses of the researchers who have done research on these families.
• GeneaNet: large lineage-linked database, centering on French families, but intended to be international in the long run.
• War graves of German soldiers: database about German soldiers who died or were missing during World Wars I and II, with the info where a person's grave can be found.
• Institut Deutsche Adelsforschung: comprehensive site about the (historical) German nobility
• The German phone book online

• Search for living persons in Germany: a new company offering the search in the inhabitants' registers of many German towns.
• Familienamen in de Nederlanden: database with Dutch family names
• Belgian family names databases: researchers' contacts and more
• GeoNome: a project showing maps with the geographical distribution of Belgian family names, based upon recent phone books
• Patronymica Romanica: geographical distribution of francophone Belgian family names

Helpful sites for place and place name search

• The Shtetl Seeker: gives the location for about any place name in Central and Eastern Europe, even if the name is not currently in use.
• Global Gazetteer: a place name database for all over the world, including maps of the places' vicinity.
• Landesvermessungsamt Baden-Württemberg: sells detailed topographic maps for Baden-Württemberg.
• Genealogisches Ortsverzeichnis: a German project, a place name database, with information about where the places are. Additional info planned in the long run.
• International Civil Heraldry: drawings of municipal coats of arms from all over the world.
• German zip codes: a list of German places, sorted after their zip codes.
• US county maps: maps of the 1895 US census, with all US counties.

• Professions: list of historical Latin and German terms for professions.

Regional genealogical research and information

• Bavaria: historical and genealogical information about Bavaria, including addresses of archives and genealogical associations.
• Bavarian Gazetteer: list of all places in Bavaria with Catholic and Protestant parishes
• Protestant church records in Bavaria: list of those church records (church books) that are stored in the central Protestant church archive for Bavaria in Regensburg. The church records not in this list are still in the parishes and have to researched there.
• Bavarian Surnames Index: a database with researchers' contacts for families from Bavaria.
• Kienings Genealogie-Datensammlung: database with families in the counties of München, Fürstenfeldbruck, Dachau, and Freising.
• Forschungen zur Geschichte des Wilhelmsgymnasiums München: site with names of all documented members of this school.
• Baden-Württemberg: historical and genealogical information about Baden-Württemberg, including addresses of archives and genealogical associations.
• Palatinate: same for the Palatinate.
• Hessen: same for Hessen.
• Uwe Porten: professional genealogical research in the areas of Rheinland-Pfalz (Palatinate) and Saarland.
• IHFF: professional research in the countries of the former Austrian monarchy.
